What Is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial release is a hands-on treatment approach that focuses on the muscles and fascia — the connective tissue that surrounds and supports muscles throughout the body. When these tissues become tight, irritated, or restricted, they can contribute to discomfort, stiffness, and limited mobility.

We use specialized soft tissue techniques to identify and address areas of tension and restricted movement. Treatment may include Fascial Distortion Model (FDM), instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) also commonly called scrapping, and hands-on techniques that combine targeted pressure with active muscle movement.

Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, we evaluate how your muscles, joints, and movement patterns work together to determine which techniques may be most appropriate for your needs. Myofascial release may be incorporated into chiropractic care, sports injury treatment, and recovery plans to help reduce discomfort, improve mobility, and support more comfortable movement.

Fascial Distortion Model (FDM)

FDM is a hands-on approach that uses a patient's description and location of pain, along with movement assessment, to guide targeted soft tissue treatment. Specific manual techniques are applied to areas of suspected fascial restriction to help address discomfort and improve mobility.

Instrument-Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization

(IASTM)

Sometimes referred to as scraping, IASTM uses specially designed tools to apply controlled pressure to muscles and surrounding soft tissue. It may help address muscle tightness, tissue sensitivity, and restricted movement.

Movement-Based Soft Tissue Therapy

This technique combines targeted hands-on pressure with guided muscle movement. By working with the muscle as it moves, treatment focuses on areas of tension, discomfort, and restricted mobility.
